In This Light and On This Evening
(Fader)
Was this Depeche Mode that came out of the speakers? Nope, this really was the third album from England's Editors, but do not allow that to sway your opinion. In This Light and on This Evening, while completely different from the band’s first two stellar releases, is still a very good piece of work.
What any fan of Editors will have to adjust to is the near absence of the big guitar sound that was so evident on past tracks such as "Munich". In This Light and on This Evening takes cues from the synth-pop of the eighties and adds in an industrial influence. The album was produced by long-time alternative rock and post-punk producer Flood, whose body of work includes the aforementioned Depeche Mode, The Killers and NIN. His obvious stamp is all over this disc.
The constant remains with the incredible vocals of Tom Smith. Those haunting vocals that bring back memories of Ian Curtis from Joy Division has always been the centerpiece of this band, and that really comes into play on the incredible title track of this album, with Smith really hitting the low baritone notes while stating "I swear to God" over and over. The rest of In This Light and on This Evening continues in the same vein, with Smith's vocals and the keyboards dominating each track, with a splash of the band's trademark guitar sound occasionally shining through.
Long-time Editors fans may have to play this album a few times to process the change in direction. What one needs to remember is that Editors continue to create epic music. Their sound is still huge, a big plus for this group. This is an album that will grow on you, making the latest from Editors a prime pick!
